No matter how much people know about bifold doors now, they were all beginners to start with. With us there is no silly question, no unimportant question and no question we want to see go unanswered.

We have put together some of our common bifold door related questions…

What are bifold doors?

A bifold door is a door made up of multiple panes which slides along a track connected by running gear top and bottom. When the doors are opened they can fold to either side of the door frame (or both sides) depending on your chosen configuration resulting on an obstruction free outdoor view.

What are bifold doors made of?

Bifold doors can be made from a range of materials. We, at HBD do not offer UPVC bifold doors as we do not have faith in them (after all we would only offer products we believe in). We offer a range of timber bifold doors, although many of these are purchased due to conservation requirements. 99% of our business if made from aluminium bifold doors. The premium grade aluminum our bifold doors are made from provides a higher quality finish than any scrap aluminium.

How much do bifold doors cost?

Costs vary depending on the manufacturer you choose. The best way to find out what your bifold door will cost is to let us give you a price. you can send a request through the website or contact us via phone or email.

How secure are bifold doors?

Security varies from manufacturer to manufacture. However be assured that all of our bifold door manufacturers meet current building regulations and therefore safety standards. If in doubt, ask about our security upgrades and see how we can improve the security standards of your doors.

What size should my bifold door be?

This is dependent on the size of your opening, when you are replacing a door the size is predetermined and you do not have to worry. If you are building your opening there are a few things to keep in mind…

  • The maximum pane width – Majority of our manufacturers can manufacture bifold panes 1.2m wide, if you are looking for wider however you may want to look at sliding doors (I know, there are even more options!)
  • The maximum pane height – and 2.7m high. There are manufacturers which can go higher depending on the width of each sash.
  • The minimum size – Although this would not usually come to mind when you are thinking of a large product like bifold doors it is always good to know all of the options. The doors go no smaller than 0.4m wide. However more doors means more aluminium you may want to have less panes. We will be happy to look at your design with you and find the best option  for your home.

Will I have a step with my doors or can they be flush?

When our surveyors come out they will be able to establish exactly where the door will sit in your home. As a general rule of thumb we will aim for an ‘almost’ flush finish. Your door threshold will be sat down and your floor inside will come up just before the rebate (lip needed for weather rating) and your outside decking or tiling sits up high like the image below. There is a handy video for  to give you more information.

How thick are the door frames?

Now this is a question where the answer means everything to some clients and nothing to others. Our different bifold manufacturers have different thicknesses. Here are a few of them…

  • Origin 75mm
  • Schuco 60mm
  • Centor
  • Sunflex 30mm

Can I install bifold doors myself?

We would not recommend installing these bifold doors yourself although we would never say never. Our bifold doors are all custom build and precision engineered meaning the more experienced the installer the better the door will run. We have been trained by each of our manufacturers on how to install the doors according to their guidelines and warranty’s.

Remember: With HBD Systems as well as the manufacturers guarantee you will receive a 10 yer guarantee on the labour from us. If you door needs an adjustment we will come out free of charge for you.

See our installation here.

Will I get a guarantee

All of our doors are guaranteed for 20 years fro the manufacturer and as mentioned above we offer a 10 year guarantee on the labour. If there are any faulty parts which need changing, we will do it, if there is an adjustment needed, we will come. The only things which are not covered here is damage due to misuse of the doors.
