Project Details: Timber Windows and Doors in Hertfordshire
This elegant new build home in Elstree, Hertfordshire demonstrates the HBD Expertise not only in providing the ideal glazing solutions for any project, but how several materials all work together in one beautiful dwelling. Timber windows, French doors and double front doors, aluminium sliding and folding doors along side internal industrial fire-rated doors and screening.
At HBD Systems, we were introduced to this project by the architect, Randall Architecture, who had been working closely with Ealing Developments on this Georgian-style new build. The home itself is a substantial detached property — brand new but designed to reflect the proportions and elegance of classic Georgian architecture.
Our first conversations with the client were focused on aluminium sash windows, but it quickly became clear that the standard of build and the level of detail in the design called for something more traditional. We proposed a shift to hardwood timber sash windows with a checked reveal detail, allowing the sash boxes to be hidden behind the stonework. We also adapted the head of the frame to maintain a consistent sightline across all openings — a small touch, but one that makes a big difference when you’re working to this level of finish.
A Traditional Look with the Performance of Modern Timber
Our latest generation Bako timber windows and doors in this Hertfordshire home use the classic cords and weights design, made from engineered hardwood and finished in RAL 9005 jet black. On the upper sash we used applied glazing bars, while the lower sash is a single pane — offering the right balance of heritage appearance and clear views. All lower-level windows are fitted with safety glass as standard, and we used satin obscure glazing to bathrooms and ensuites.
All sash windows include our tilt-in facility for easy cleaning, and fitch catches for secure day-to-day use. The thermal performance is excellent, with highly insulated glass units and warm edge spacer bars — so while the exterior sits comfortably within its Georgian context, the performance is thoroughly modern.
Bako cords and weights sash windows use a traditional counterbalance system that’s ideal for period properties and conservation areas as well as new build homes. Available in multiple frame and sash sizes, they accommodate a wide range of glazing options—from single glazing and slimline units to double, triple, or vacuum-insulated LandVac™ glass. Each window is built with an effective sealing system to ensure smooth operation, long-term performance, and compliance with today’s thermal standards.
A Bespoke Timber Front Door
At the centre of the façade is a bespoke double front door, again finished in matt black. Each leaf features two solid panels with ovolo detailing — subtle, but it softens the look and adds depth. Flanking the doors are two narrow sandblasted glazed side panels, providing privacy without blocking natural light. As a full set, the door and side panels perfectly suit the proportions and symmetry of the front elevation. The HBD front doors range, is one of the most comprehensive in the area.
High-Performance Patio doors to the Rear Extension
At the back of the house, the ground floor opens out to a large patio. In the centre is a five-panel Origin OB-49 bifold door with 110mm sightlines, a built-in traffic door, and the usual Origin hardware — all colour matched in black. Either side of the bifold are two-panel Sunflex SVG20 sliding doors, with a 20mm central mullion and flush-stacking panels.
All rear elevation doors are designed with lower-set thresholds and tracks for easy access and a seamless link between the kitchen/living space and the garden. As standard doors come with 28mm toughened glass units, low-e coating, argon gas fill, and warm edge spacers — so performance matches the visual spec.
Internal Fire Doors in W20 Steel
Inside the home, we supplied a bespoke internal fire-rated screen in W20 steel. This sits between the hallway and the main living areas, providing the required fire protection while keeping the space visually connected. The screen includes double doors with matching side and top panels, a feature lock body, colour-matched hinges and handles, and full fire compliance — including intumescent seals, fire-rated safety glass, and correct fixings.
It is very important with any fire rated product that every component is precise and correct in order for the door and screen to provide the required protection in the event of a fire. Even our installers are specially trained.
A Project That Showcases Timber at Its Best
Every detail of this home is considered, and the HBD Collection of windows and doors in timber, aluminium and steel, works perfectly with the interior décor, as well as providing functionality, elegance and fire-safety.
Our luxurious timber windows are unquestionably the right choice — not just for the aesthetic, but because it allowed us to work with window showcasing traditional manufacturing methods and the appeal of visible cords and weights, as well as bespoke finishing.
This project is a great example of how traditional materials and modern systems can work together. With timber, aluminium and steel used across different parts of the house, we were able to meet all functional, aesthetic, and regulatory requirements — without compromise.
