Project Details: HBD Timber Windows and Doors to a Contemporary Chalet-Style Home
This substantial home in St Albans is an excellent example of where you can use the best in door and window materials, steel, aluminium and timber. Contemporary architecture and traditional detailing, brought together with the HBD range of HBD Timber Windows and doors, and Sunflex open corner sliding doors. Each of these premium materials serves a specific aesthetic purpose, creating a home that feels both architectural and deeply comfortable.
From the outset, this project was about balance. Externally, the property presents a chalet-style form with strong gables and clean white elevations, complemented by a brick side extension. Connected by a black steel glazed link. Internally, the design introduces exposed steel posts, decorative metal detailing, stone floors and richly textured finishes, all softened by timber joinery, traditional panelled bathrooms and carefully selected period features.
HBD Timber Sash Windows – Authentic Craftsmanship with Modern Performance
The traditional sliding sash windows with cords and weights play a central role in maintaining the character of the property. This centuries-old system allows the sashes to glide smoothly, using counterbalanced weights concealed within the frame, delivering the authentic appearance expected of high-end period-style homes.
Manufactured in premium hardwood and finished to a high standard, these sash windows combine heritage detailing with modern performance. Multiple frame thicknesses were selected to suit the architecture, with options including 145mm, 150mm and 165mm frames, ensuring correct proportions across different elevations.
Every window comes triple glazed delivering excellent thermal efficiency while retaining the visual delicacy of traditional sash windows. Period hardware completes the look, including fitch catches, sash lifts and ring pulls in an antique brass finish, and complementing the matt white painted finish.
HBD Timber Windows and Doors – Traditional Joinery, Modern Engineering
This project also features a wide range of HBD Timber casement timber windows and doors, selected for their build quality, finish and long-term durability. For this project the windows come in the flush design outside and a stepped look inside, providing balanced sightlines and symmetry across the elevations.
Finished in a classic white, these windows are fitted with multi-point locking, extensive sealing and timber cills. Internally, antique black pear drop handles were chosen to complement the exposed steel detailing elsewhere in the home.
French doors are used extensively, with configurations including full-height French doors with side panels. These are supplied with triple glazed safety glass, internal beading and discreet hardware. The primary leaf carries the operating hardware, while the secondary leaf remains clean and handle-free for a refined appearance.
A hardwood single door finished in anthracite grey provides contrast, reinforcing the layered material palette used throughout the property.
Sunflex SVG20 Sliding Doors – Light, Space and Architectural Detail
Two sets of Sunflex SVG20 open corner and pocket sliding doors complete the glazing package. One three-panel set opens the lounge directly onto the garden, while an internal open-corner configuration creates a striking connection to the inner courtyard.
The corner sliding doors are designed with a lower-set track, allowing easy, minimal-step access between spaces. Finished in a dark tone, the aluminium frames sit alongside exposed cruciform steel posts, which form an integral part of the interior design rather than being hidden away.
Flush stacking panels, colour-matched straight pull handles and high-performance safety glazing ensure these doors deliver both architectural impact and everyday usability. As expected with Sunflex, smooth operation and precise detailing define the system.
